We specialise in the diagnosis and repair of problems associated with the Lucas fuel injection systems as fitted to Triumph TR5/6.
We have accumulated the test equipment and knowledge to enable us to diagnose the problems quickly and efficiently.

Fuel Injector

When a car enters our workshop our first objective is to be certain that the engine is in good shape and is capable of being tuned to achieve best performance and economy; this is not a five-minute job and will take a few hours. For the fuel injection system to work correctly the engine must be in good health. If any of the engine and its ancillary components are not correct we will stop and report our findings to you before we go any further, recommending the necessary repairs to stop you wasting your time and money. Once we have undertaken all of our preliminary tests and are completely happy with the results, we will then move on to the rolling road.

By using the rolling road, we can calibrate your metering unit to optimise your fuelling system at all throttle loads. Most of this pump calibration for a road car is done at the lower end of the RPM (30 to 60MPH) which is where you will spend the most time driving.
The ignition timing will be set to what your car requires, not to what a book recommends, the fuelling will be correctly calibrated. By optimising the ignition and fuelling correctly using our equipment, all guesswork is removed from the equation and will make the engine run smoother, using less fuel and increasing the longevity of the engine and as a by-product, should give you a noticeable increase in the engines performance.

Throttle Bodies

A correctly calibrated Lucas fuel injection system should give much better results for a road car than fitting a Weber conversion. If you fit a Weber conversion it will do the job very well, but you must bear in mind that these are sports carburettors and are intended for sports cars and race cars. Most owners of TR’s will not use the car for spirited driving or racing but are happier driving at a slower pace and enjoying their driving experience. If you fit Weber carbs you will for the most part, not enjoy the car so much and you will of course remove the originality of the car. There is also the option for EFI conversion. If done correctly using a quality ECU that is calibrated correctly you will see excellent results, probably bettering the Lucas system. However, there are many ECU’s on the market and many rolling roads to choose from. The cheaper the ECU the harder it will be to find a good rolling road operator prepared to work on it; there is a reason why these ECU’s are cheap! A good ECU and a professional rolling road operator do not come cheap and the quality parts it needs to do the job correctly will cost you significantly more money than you originally budgeted for.

ASNU Injector Testing for Lucas PI Systems

Atspeed uses an ASNU Tester on all Lucas PI Injection Systems. With the ASNU injector tester we can check the opening pressure of the injectors, visually check the spray pattern and observe the flow rate individually using the calibrated test tubes to measure injector flow rate accurately.

We do not use compressed air as to test injectors as this can cause many other problems.

It is important that the fuel pressure is checked, we use a gel filled calibrated pressure gauge for this.
